Tamara de Lempicka, “Young Girl in Green (Young Girl with Gloves),” 1923, oil on board
Blazing a brilliant trail throughout the art deco era, Tamara de Lempicka is synonymous with the cultural conversation of the time. This month marks the prolific artist’s first major retrospective in the United States. Patrons can revel in the prolific portfolio of the iconic Lempicka through her thought-provoking paintings and drawings, which will be on display through May 26. “Tamara de Lempicka took Paris by storm in the 1920s, defying convention while capturing the spirit of her times through her peerless Jazz Age portraits and nudes,” shares Isabel Brown Wilson Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at the MFAH, Alison de Lima Greene. “A century later, we can recognize the challenges she faced as a woman with Jewish heritage in an era of lethal anti-Semitism, a story that is only beginning to be told.”
