StudioMET strikes again with yet another architecturally flawless family home—graftHAUS—featured for its shrewd design at AIA Houston’s 2022 annual home tour.

The task is typically laid out for one of studioMET’s (studiomet.com) principal architects and partner Shawn Gottschalk, who invariably uses his eye for design to cater to each of his clients’ every need. Putting his highly esteemed design abilities to the test with his own family’s home, meet graftHAUS—Gottschalk’s latest charming construction on display at the annual AIA Houston Home Tour last month.

Building off a stellar foundation from his prior two family homes—Gottschalk calls the method “grafting”—the property was designed to host not only his household but also family members during extended stays. Fine-tuning aspects such as the addition of a separate guest house and some definition of space within an open-concept layout were features that his family prioritized.

Reimagining the space was a new yet necessary measure in building the Gottshalk family’s third home. He was able to manifest this vision by incorporating elements of traditional Japanese architecture—a minimalist facade, series of courtyards and continuous veranda around the home. Consistent with both previous homes, there is a solid connection to the outdoors, an abundance of natural light, an open-plan interior, the use of window walls, a horizontal emphasis in massing and a natural earth tone color palette of materials. Exceeding the family’s expectations yet again,

Gottshalk’s admirable construction is proof that there is no task that he isn’t apt to complete.
