Constantly creating various ways to stimulate the mind and spark creative conversations, Canadian American artist Philip Guston’s career spanned over 50 years. Now, thanks to The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, Guston’s prolific work can be enjoyed by the entire city and beyond. Running through Jan. 16, the museum presents Philip Guston Now—which serves as Guston’s first retrospective in nearly 20 years.

Take a visit to the museum and you will be met with an incredible collection of thought-provoking pieces on display. Featuring 86 paintings and 33 drawing and prints, patrons can delight in both wellknown and rarely seen works from Guston. “Few artists of the 20th century remain more compelling or mysterious to contemporary viewers,” notes Gary Tinterow, director and Margaret Alkek Williams chair of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. “Guston’s extraordinary turn away from the gorgeous abstract paintings with which he made his reputation in order to make inscrutable figurative paintings filled with doubt and anxiety align him with his hero, Francisco de Goya. Like Goya, Guston felt compelled at the end of his career to comment on society and the human condition in ways that break convention and require the viewer’s commitment. It is almost impossible to be indifferent to Guston’s art.” 1001 Bissonnet St., mfah.org
