Mendocino Farms’ colorful Avocado & Quinoa Superfood Ensalada
Mendocino Farms (5510 Morningside Drive, mendocinofarms.com), the Californian chef-driven sandwich and salad empire with a cult following, has big plans for Houston with its first opening in Rice Village this summer. Husband-and-wife team Mario Del Pero and Ellen Chen “strive to stay on the culinary vanguard and push the limits of what a simple sandwich or salad can be. But the larger idea,” they say, “is to create a neighborhood gathering place for guests to have a good meal and maybe even learn something about a local farm or seasonal ingredient.” Expect decadent and healthful sandwiches, including the Impossible Burger Queen on a toasted plant-based brioche bun with housemade bread and butter pickles; a Modern Tuna “Almost Melt,” made with line-caught premium yellowfin tuna and farmhouse cheddar; and luxurious center-of-the-plate salads like their bestselling Avocado & Quinoa Superfood Ensalada. There’s a Foodie Favorites section on the menu, with Mendo’s Original Pork Belly Banh Mi, the chef’s playful take on the popular Vietnamese sandwich. You’ll get responsibly raised meats along with vegetarian and vegan options, all thanks to Mendocino Farms’ artisanal partners.
