It’s finally Memorial Day Weekend, and the temps are heating up in Houston as the unofficial start of summer kicks off. This three-day holiday weekend is packed with activities honoring the men and women who have sacrificed their lives to protect our freedom. Here’s the full roundup of celebratory happenings in and around Houston.
Honor fallen soldiers at the Houston National Cemetery as keynote speaker and chief veterans experience officer John Boerstler leads the commemoration ceremony, beginning at 9 a.m.
Learn about the history of the Navy in a guided tour at the Galveston Naval Museum, which will also host a moving ceremony on the importance of honoring the heroes who risked their lives for our nation. Mayor Craig Brown will be speaking starting at 10 a.m., and museum admission is free until 11 a.m.
Another way to honor the brave men and women who fought for our freedom is by running, and the Memorial Day 10K and 5K is your next opportunity. Join Houston Running Co. at St. Thomas High School Memorial Drive on Monday, bright and early at 7:30 a.m.
It’s not a proper celebratory weekend without fireworks, which will be ever present at the Memorial Day Festival in The Woodlands in addition to live music, children’s activities and entertainment from all corners. This time, the fireworks are popping off with a fun twist—in sync with patriotic music. The Sunday festival takes places at Town Green Park from 5 to 9 p.m.
The U.S. Coast Guard will present and retire the flags at an 11 a.m. ceremony preceding the golf cart procession that will make its way through downtown. The spectacle will take place at VFW Post 880 in Galveston.
Science geeks won’t want to miss the Memorial Day Weekend extravaganza at Lone Star Flight Museum, which will be offering special aircraft and spacecraft tours, as well as free flight simulators and the opportunity to engineer your own mini-rocket.
Join the community on a walk along the flag-lined Seymour Lieberman Trail at Memorial Park to honor those who have served and lost their lives protecting our nation. Memorial Park was founded in 1924 in memory of the fallen soldiers of World War I, after being used as a national guard training base. The walk is free and continues through Monday.
Famed German techno DJ Stephan Bodzin is headlining a set at Bauhaus Houston along with Aly & Fila in what will be a 12-hour marathon. Doors open at 4 p.m. on Sunday.
Fielding’s Local Kitchen + Bar is throwing a festive patio party with live music and all-American features on Monday from 3 to 9 p.m. Chef Edel will be firing up mouthwatering bites and head bartender Luis V. will be filling your glasses with refreshing concoctions.
It’s an extra special Monday at Pier 6 Seafood & Oyster House because they’re usually closed—but not on Memorial Day. From 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., Guests and service members are encouraged to join a family-friendly day at the restaurant turned carnival, complete with a bounce house, popcorn machine, snow cones, patriotic decorations, live music and $4 Ocean Water.
Head to the largest lagoon in Texas for not only a waterfront getaway but a Tribute to U.S. Fest, taking place on Sunday and Monday of this weekend. Lagoonfest is welcoming a full lineup of musical performers in an ode to Steve Wozniak’s original U.S. festival created in 1983. Military personnel receive free admission with an active ID.
