Celebrated architect Mark Richardson manifests the ultimate oasis for a newly reimagined home in Austin.
The spa includes a western red cedar-clad dry sauna, a reeded glass-enclosed steam room, a custom cold plunge tub, and a hot and cold shower that pulls cool water from the plunge tub.
For architect Mark Richardson, it was crucial to honor this Austin home’s existing architecture and integrity as he helped modernize it through a carefully curated remodel. The clients enlisted Richardson and his team to take their home in an innovative new direction, tapping into unused spaces and turning it up a notch with state-of-the-art amenities. Showcasing the ultimate mix of indoor-outdoor living components, the reimagined home is a sumptuous sanctuary optimal for entertaining and unwinding. “We carefully added a modern outdoor living space by the pool while converting a half-basement room into a serene home spa,” Richardson notes. “What once was a seldom-used part of the property is now a destination for entertaining and relaxing.” Working alongside the clients, he crafted key elements, including updated outdoor living offerings adjacent to the existing pool, a wood-fired pizza oven, outdoor fireplace, a complete kitchen and spacious dining areas. The pièce de résistance is a home spa with a dry sauna, steam room, cold plunge pool and an indoor living area. “The interior material palette was carefully selected to create a soft, warm, relaxing environment that also functions in a wet spa environment,” he explains. Leaning heavily into the health and wellness movement, this new slice of paradise is sheer bliss among bucolic surroundings. “This remodel and addition picked up on the lines and materials of a beautiful home,” Richardson says.
