Founded in 1968, Theatre Under the Stars has been defying gravity for the last 50 years, so who better to continue the upward momentum of its community-enriching impact than wickedly talented Broadway superstar Idina Menzel? The Tony Award-winning icon headlined the organization’s anniversary season gala—co-chaired by Leticia and Steve Trauber, and Cheryl and Louis Raspino—at The Post Oak Hotel, where over 600 black-tie partygoers sipped cocktails and savored a delectable three-course meal alongside Artistic Director Dan Knechtges, Executive Director Hillary Hart and the evening’s master of ceremonies, ABC13’s Samica Knight. Performing a variety of fan favorites, Menzel was certainly a highlight; her interactions with talented audience members—one being local powerhouse performer Christina Wells, as well as students from TUTS’ own Humphreys School for Musical Theatre and The River Performing and Visual Arts Center—left not a dry eye in the house. Following the heartwarming program, Mayor Sylvester Turner offered a Champagne toast, after which confetti filled the air and socialites hit the dance floor, invigorated by the electrifying energy of the Georgia Bridgwater Orchestra. The event, which also featured a live auction led by Jeff Smith, raised a record $1.37 million for Houston’s “home for musical theatre.” 713.558.2600, tuts.com
