Three cheers for Dave Ward! The Houston media icon (dubbed “America’s Longest Running News Anchor” and “Voice of Houston”) recently cemented his name in H-Town history with the debut of his very own street marker entitled “Honorary Dave Ward Place.”
Ward, who began his career in 1966, has interviewed 5 U.S. Presidents, was instrumental in establishing Crime Stoppers in Houston and prides himself on always getting the facts right. As if that’s not impressive enough, he is also recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records as the longest-running local TV news anchor in the world at the same station, in the same market.
At the unveiling of his street marker, Ward was honored by Mayor Sylvester Turner, and police chief Troy Finner shared touching words about his career and contributions to the city. An array of former Houston news anchors, employees and management were in attendance (think Don Nelson, Shara Fryer, Don Kobos and more), and Ward was accompanied by his wife, Laura Ward, who is also a notable philanthropic figure in the Houston community. In reference to the Crime Stopper’s building named after him and the new unveiling, Ward jokes, “I've got my name on a building, and now I've got my name on a street. I guess a few people have heard of me.” To see the sign yourself, head downtown, near the ABC 13 building located at 3400 Bissonnet St. and 5200 Westchester in the Upper Kirby area.
