Taiwan-born, New York-based foodie Danielle Chang—who spent much of her childhood here in Houston—makes a triumphant return Oct. 6 for the Texas debut of Lucky Rice, her Asian-focused pop-up dinner series that’s already been a hit in New York and Los Angeles.
Chang began the series in 2010 as a way to dispel the stereotype that Asian food comes only in a takeout box. For years she’s been watching Houston transform, eagerly waiting for just the right time—and partnership. “Lucky Rice has never been in the Southwest, and I’m curious to explore how it will take shape,” says Chang. “Think about it: Chris Shepherd, who’s not Asian, prepares more Asian dishes than Justin Yu. These notable chefs have all brought Asian food to a fine dining caliber,” she adds.
In addition to spreading the word through culinary fests, the mother of two also has her own PBS series, Lucky Chow, which follows her on various journeys to explore the influence of Asian cultures on America. And earlier this year, she published the Lucky Rice cookbook ($17, Clarkson Potter) that O, The Oprah Magazine named its cookbook of the month. “I wanted to create a platform for everyone to be able to celebrate their enthusiasm as our frenzy for Asian food and culture continues to grow,” says Chang of her inspiration for the cookbook. luckyrice.com
