What would you say was the biggest inspiration to open your own gallery?
AH: The biggest inspiration to open our gallery was the desire to bring fresh, new artwork to Houston. After spending years in the gallery world and running one ourselves, we were eager to represent and curate artists who perfectly align with the needs and tastes of the Houston community. The opportunity to be the creative force behind this endeavor and contribute to the city’s art scene was incredibly motivating.

How has the Houston community supported you since the opening?
AO: The support we’ve received from the Houston community since our opening has been nothing short of remarkable. We’ve been humbled by the extent of that support, even from new clients eager to collaborate with us and promote our mission. Houston has truly stood behind us, rallying for the success of two young natives committed to revitalizing the art scene. We’ve been so thrilled and inspired to see how others share in our unwavering belief in the Houston art scene’s potential to shine brightly once again.
How would you describe Houston’s art scene?
AH: Houston’s art scene is a dynamic and ever-evolving landscape. While the city’s art market has long been a thriving part of the community, the broader art scene faced some challenges in the aftermath of COVID. However, in recent years, there has been a resurgence of energy and enthusiasm, fueled in part by the collective efforts of galleries on Houston’s historic Gallery Row along Colquitt Street.
Can you talk about what guests can expect when visiting the gallery?
AO: When guests visit our gallery, they can expect to step into an inviting environment where happiness and joy take center stage. Our mission goes beyond just selling art; it’s about creating a welcoming and comfortable space. Historically, art galleries have sometimes been perceived as exclusive or unattainable. We’re here to change that perception.
Our gallery is dedicated to breaking down those barriers, making art accessible, and ensuring that every visitor feels genuinely welcome. We’re on a mission to redefine the gallery experience, providing an atmosphere where both clients and artists can engage with art in a new, refreshing, and inclusive way.
What makes Avant-Art Gallery stand out from other Houston institutions?
AH: Avant-Art Gallery stands out from other Houston institutions through our commitment to innovation and inclusivity. We actively seek out fresh ideas and host a multitude of collaborative events with other Houston businesses. These partnerships are designed to bridge the gap, inviting individuals who may have never ventured into a gallery or museum to explore and embrace the vibrant world of art. Our dedication to making art accessible and approachable sets us apart in the Houston art scene.
Anything else you would like to buzz for the upcoming months?
AO: We are thrilled to introduce an exciting educational video series that delves into the world of contemporary artists, highlighting the twenty-five artists in our stable. While many are familiar with the iconic artists of the past—such as Warhol, Monet, Van Gogh, Rothko, and more—we believe it’s equally important to shine a spotlight on the talented artists of today. Our upcoming series, titled “Avant-Garde Visions: Contemporary Artistry Unveiled,” is designed to provide art enthusiasts, aspiring artists, and anyone seeking to broaden their knowledge with a unique glimpse into the lives and works of modern artists who have not only made art their career but are actively shaping today’s art landscape. Stay tuned for an enlightening journey into the world of artistry today. We will start sending out teasers for this series and debut its release in January of 2024, sending out one video each month. 2625 Colquitt St., 713.657.5802
