Sip Beautiful Cocktails At These 5 Houston Bars

By Kiley Faulkner By Kiley Faulkner | December 24, 2020 | Food & Drink

For a cocktail that’s (almost) too pretty to drink, head to one of these five hot spots.

1. Anvil Bar & Refuge
Known as Houston’s first bar devoted to classic cocktails, this Montrose gem has earned an impressive reputation among industry insiders. Be sure to order the Brave—owner Bobby Heugel’s storied concoction of mezcal, blanco tequila, orange liqueur, amaro and angostura bitters, garnished with a flamed orange peel. 1424 Westheimer Road, 713.523.1622, anvilhouston.com

2. Julep
Much like its namesake drink, this local watering hole has Southern charm in spades. In response to the pandemic, Julep shifted its brick-and-mortar business to a cocktail truck model, offering delivery and curbside pickup only—now operating as Julep To Go. Spice it up with the Old Pepper, a bourbon-based drink with lemon, hot sauce and Worcestershire. 832.371.7715, juleptogo.com

3. Monkey’s Tail
This Lindale Park dive slings tropical drinks and casual eats in a colorful atmosphere. For a sweet treat, try the C.R.E.A.M.—small-batch bourbon, heavy cream, banana, panela, nutmeg, sherry and Midnight Marigold bitters. Or opt for a lighter beverage like the Floradora, which blends gin, watermelon, lemon and ginger beer. 5802 Fulton St., 713.842.7188, monkeystailhou.com

4. Rosie Cannonball
Following the success of this summer’s Spritz Patio concept, Montrose favorite Rosie Cannonball has transformed its outdoor space for wintertime. The Chalet at Rosie Cannonball offers a special curated menu and hours that differ from those of Rosie’s main dining room. While you may not be sipping cocktails après ski, The Chalet’s seasonal tipples are as close as it gets. Order the Mulled Spritz, a rosy-hued blend of grappa, cranberry, allspice and bubbles. 1620 Westheimer Road, 832.380.2471, rosiecannonball.com

5. Secret Garden
In the heart of downtown Houston, Bravery Chef Hall’s charming patio bar delivers stunning cocktails in a picturesque setting. Known for adorning its pastel-colored drinks with candied citrus accents, Secret Garden is a very Instagram-worthy happy hour destination. 409 Travis St., Ste. A, 832.350.6595, @secretgardenhtx
